Logistics professionals have contributed significantly towards economic growth. Managing warehouse and transportation operations is one of the toughest jobs and require superhuman efforts and rigour for perfect execution.
Warehouse operations is unloading of goods, storing them accurately in safe and hygienic environment and picking and loading goods to service customer orders. Transportation is about movement of goods from source to destination location. E- commerce businesses are largely supported by logistics delivery model to service customer orders.
Logistics professionals are heroes because of following reasons:
1. Logistics ensure Business continuity:
They keep the business running. Storage and movement of goods is essential to ensure business continuity and it connects materials from suppliers to factory warehouses and products from manufacturers to consumers.
A company generates money when it makes a sale to the customer. Sales will not happen if distribution centers do not load and dispatch the goods and transporter connects it to the customer on timely basis.
Similarly, factories will run when they have sufficient Raw and Packing materials for production of goods. Product flow in supply chain network is essential to ensure goods delivery to the consumers. The type of service delivered by the warehousing and transportation teams can have significant impact on the customer relationships
2. Challenging environment:
Warehouses have high pressure work environment. Work is physical and deadlines are fixed. People management is challenging as warehouse manager needs to deal with labour, transporters, drivers and local unions.
Resources are limited and when Material handling equipment or vehicles are in breakdown it is an additional burden. In a typical warehouse, thousands of cases are unloaded and dispatched every day, lakhs of cases are stored and stock should match perfectly all the time.
There is no scope of any miss ever. No doubt, one of the leading E-commerce company hire army personnel to run its warehouse operations.
On Transportation front, vehicle drivers are always on the move. They need to be focused driving on road, have high fatigue, eat road side food, away from family and striving to deliver the goods as per commitment.
They wait for days at one location if vehicles are detained. I have travelled on National highway almost every day during the lockdown. There were no people on the road during the lockdown but trucks were always visible carrying the goods to keep the economy running in every way possible.
3. Selfless contribution by Logistics professionals :
This is the real and the big one. There are no rewards, medals, recognition or roll of honours for logistics teams. They are expected to do their job perfectly well and if something goes wrong, are often at the receiving end. They work with full passion and commitment without expecting much in return.
Logistics professionals have contributed significantly to drive the economy growth engine without complaining. They include logistics leaders, warehouse managers, loading crews, forklift drivers, hygiene and housekeeping staff, system operators, drivers and helpers, vehicle schedulers and equipment and vehicle service providers.
They are the ones who deliver goods at our doorstep during Covid-19 pandemic and largely remains unsung for their efforts and contributions. Let us acknowledge their contributions and provide due recognition which they truly deserve.
Overall logistics is going to be the key sector to drive economic growth. India’s future GDP growth will be dependent upon how Logistics sector pans out and build capability and automation to handle scale. Government is investing in developing infrastructure, roads, railways and highways to facilitate industrial development. Digitization of transport processes and introducing fast tags on tolls are the steps in right direction.
