How do you turn around an Interview ?
Personal Interviews are an important aspect of one’s career as success in interviews will decide your progression in career. There are multiple dynamics while facing an interview as your performance is assessed over a short time.
You needs to be good in functional knowledge and technical skills , work experience, communication and behavioral skills and make a good impression in limited time.
But all interviews may not go as expected!
Many times there will be situations in interviews which will make you feel dejected as things may not go well as expected. Interviewer may think that you are not good enough and may be testing or undermining you leading to discouragement and loss of confidence.
At the same time these interviews also stretch you to think beyond the obvious and perform to the best of your ability. When pressurized in a must do situation, there is no option but to perform your best.
Sharing real experience on one similar situation during one of my important interviews which could make or break my career and what happened during the interview and how I responded to it.
I entered the interview room.
After initial exchange of greetings, interviewer picked up my Curriculum Vitae ( CV) in his hand and said,
This is your CV, right?
How do you turn around an Interview ?
I replied in affirmation.
I could see some lines already being marked on my CV.
He started reading my CV and spoke line by line key responsibilities, achievements, work experience and skills mentioned.
I was glad that interview is going in right direction and will be asked more about CV which was well prepared
Then shockingly conversation turned in the opposite direction and interviewer said that no doubt your Profile is impressive and you have done good work but it does not match with our requirements.
Then he explained in detail that how skills and experience mentioned in CV are not what they are looking for and my profile is not a suitable fit for them.
Interviewer told me in such a convincing manner that I also thought for a moment that what he is saying is right and my profile is not suitable and relevant to their requirements.
My world crashed and came down in a moment.
I felt like silently standing up and leaving the room.
Battle was over without me getting an opportunity to fire a single shot.
Then interviewer slowly asked that now tell us why should we take you?
I thought that don’t know about the final result but need to tell them something which is super impressive else my chances are already over.
Then I recalled past years of preparation and work experience and it prompted me to reply to question in such a way that it is fully justified that why should they take me and I am the best candidate for the position.
And then I spoke in detail about achievements in my career , skills and strengths possessed, tough situations handled and complex challenges overcame successfully.
The differentiating value I bring in to the table and the difference I will make and what and how can contribute towards delivering the transformed results for the organization. (Actually, had prepared and rehearsed for it. So, speech was effortless)
And at the end of it found them impressed. They asked few more questions and interview was over.
Finally, I was selected in the organization and this interview was a great experience of being resilient when cornered and delivering your best in tough situations
Summary as an answer to the question on how do you turn around an interview is that if you have confidence in your capabilities
backed by solid work ethics, then believe in yourself, rise again and deliver your best.
