Imagine the situation you meet some one for the first time and he introduce himself to you proudly with his name. With great difficulty and using your best memory skills, you managed to remember his or her name.
Now, when you meet him again after some time and call him with his name, you can see the expression on his face.
You would have made him immensely happy with a simple gesture of remembering the name.
Actually what you did is that that you made him feel special.
Very special.
Remember the name is more of a skill which can be learned with practice than it is about strength of memory
Sharing my real experience which taught me importance of remembering the name
I joined my first job in a manufacturing plant in state of Chhatisgarh.
My first task in first job was to take attendance of twenty team members in an attendance register .
Procedure was quite simple. I had to call names reading out from attendance register
Individuals come in front of me and said Present verbally to confirm their presence
Pretty simple, I thought and first day passed away
But next day was not going to be that simple which I was soon going to discover.
Next Day I called the person name & everyone said in unison that you should recognize by face as already told our name yesterday
I was in a fix & honestly, have not paid much attention to names & faces as if who was whom.
I asked them to tell name one time and from tomorrow will remember on my own
Team agreed for one time.
This time I tried to pay more attention to faces so that I am prepared for tomorrow.
Somehow attendance was completed.
My team had already given me task before I could give them any
and I wanted to do well in this task.
I spent remaining day connecting with each person and strike a conversation with them.
I asked their names, family & interests to weave story around them.
Next day, I was able to recall their names with success rate of 70% and by fifth day success rate to remember the name was 100%
It was good lesson on importance to remember the name and how much people value it specially from their leaders.
Over the years, I have learnt to be interested in people and know more about person, family, background, native place & interests to weave story around them and remember them.
And when you meet them next time and call them by name,
Hear a silent WOW & expression on their face will be priceless!
The best way to remember the name is to know more about a person, family, background, native place & interests to weave story around them. It is a learnable skill and can be of great importance in valuing others and building strong relationships.
