Practice what you Preach
#practicewhatyourpreach
Many people preach lot of things nowadays on various social media channels. But real test is do they really believe in what they say or they say just for the sake of saying it. Actually only preaching does not help or make any influencing impact on people as long as it is not practiced. Best way to evaluate and judge people on what they preach is if they actually follow it in the practical life.
Sharing one of my experiences where I visited a spiritual organization renowned for its programs but figured out at the end that what they Preach they do not Practice.
I went for an advanced meditation course organized by a spiritual organization renowned for its spiritual programs. It was a three day residential course and I was youngest of all the participants. We were a group of twenty people.
On the first day in the morning, I woke up at 6 am and reached mediation hall. It started with exercises and yoga and continued till 8 AM. Then we were asked to take a break and assemble again after the breakfast
Everybody assembled at scheduled time in the Hall. Then everyone was called one by one and asked a question. Question was that Share your problems ?
People started coming one by one and started sharing their problems. It made me jittery because magnitude of their problems were huge.
Their problems were like this:
A woman’s son was not mentally well since childhood and she was tired of taking care of him
A man had lost his last three jobs because of epileptic attacks which does not allow him to focus on work
A couple had consecutive four miscarriages
A married woman who was born diabetic and with troubled childhood
and many more. In the end, my turn came
I was also asked the question : share your problems?
I replied- I have no problems
Everyone was shocked to hear my response.
Then came the next question – Then why have you come here ?
I said- I have come here to find the God!
No body said anything but people kept on asking me one to one that how is it possible that you have no problem and how will you find God here. I said I have no clue yet but looking at magnitude of problems others in the group are facing I literally have no problems in comparison. So, three days had passed and I liked the walks in surrounding forest, dance and drama and doing regular chores in the ashram
Now, Main instructor told everyone a strict rule in the beginning that tea is not good and don’t drink it during the course as well as afterwards. When course ended, first thing main instructor did was to order tea for himself.
I asked him that you said not to take tea but now you are the one ordering it immediately once the course has ended. He said it is ok once in a while.
I concluded that this organization does not follow the principle of practice what you preach
So, this is not the right place to find God.
It was an eye opener for me and I stopped following their teachings.
It also gave me an insight that we should always evaluate others on their beliefs and practices and not simply blindly follow them.
Practice what you preach is essential trademark of great leaders in all spheres of life and it can be great check for integrity of people.
At the end a participant asked me did you find the God
I said: God is there but not here!
