Driving Execution Excellence
Most of the strategies and plans fail than succeed. And strategists wonder that what had gone wrong. Generally they are not ready to accept the biggest reason for failure which is execution because they always believed that it is someone else job.
Most of strategies and planning fail at the final step of execution because they have not figured out how to drive and succeed at Execution. Moreover thinking is that execution is an operational job and could be handled by the people at the lower levels in the organization.
But this is primarily the reason for failure of execution excellence because management does not provide for the required focus and efforts to drive execution excellence.
Key steps and actions that are required to enable successful execution are listed as follows:
- Leadership involvement: Leadership involvement is must required in execution. Leadership need to have deep understanding of how part and nuts and bolts of execution. It gives lot of encouragement and motivation to people on the ground and teams deliver their best for successful execution of strategy
- Focused efforts : Strategy need to be defined in such a way that efforts are focused on few key deliverables rather than too many things. Efforts in a specific direction are required to deliver significant and important results. Its impact is very high and sometimes not easily understood and the one that can described enough.
- Keep track of progress: Execution cannot be left at its own. Progress has to be tracked regularly on where execution is going well and where is it facing challenges. Execution is never a linear process. There are many hiccups in the process and teething issues which need to be resolved. Regular review is required by the top leadership to keep track of progress on execution
- Align people: Execution excellence require strong alignment among all the functions so that there is synergy between actions of various functions and progress is made in one direction in a conscious way. It also enables people to understand that how they are contributing towards achievement of end goal. Aligning people motivate them to deliver their best to achieve the goals.
- Shaping the right direction: It is important to shape the right direction for execution excellence. Course correction may be required when it is in progress and team will seek the shaping of their efforts in the right direction to minimize the risk of failures.
- Listen to problems: It is important to listen to problems. Listening to problems provides lot of insight on key challenges faced and then work out solutions together. It takes lot of courage to ask and listen the problems but at the same time this approach is highly effective in successful end delivery of execution excellence.
Driving execution excellence is not just the responsibility of lowest level in the hierarchy rather it is the responsibility and accountability of entire organization.
Because ultimately no strategy can be successful until it is not executed well !
